In the second half of July 2004 Philip Davydov has kept an intensive 7 days international iconography course in Italy. The course was kept in a light and wide two-level room, situated just behind St. Bartolomeo al'isola church in the center of Rome.
Working day began at 9-15 A.M.
with particular prayers in St. Bartolomeo church, and completed with
8 P.M. evening service at Santa Maria in Trastevere church. These prayers gave a
special spiritual atmosphere to all the course, and helped us to concentrate
better in our work.
Course consisted of two parts.
In practical work the students passed through all the steps of creating an icon. Some students choose their own subjects for the icons, other participants followed the model of Philip Davydov for a clearer comprehension of the process. In the beginning they were taught to lay out the composition for the icon, to prepare gilding process, and then to proceed the work till the very end. The working process was accompained by practical comments and demonstration of every step by Philip Davydov, who contemporarely worked with his own icon in front of the students.
Theoretical part took it's place paralelly with the practical work. Every day, during these 7days, once or twice a day the practical work was accompained with theoretical lectures, dedicated to the theory, history and theology of Christian church sacred art. Four evenings, after lunch and the evening service, were dedicated to theoretical lectures with slide shows.
During all the course time Philip Davydov personally helped to every student, explaining and practically showing difficult parts of the work. The rhythm of the work was very intensive, and therefore in seven days every student had a possibility to begin and to complete an own icon of suggested subject.
